Vol. 414 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marine Rescue Operation.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

60 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Defence if a request was received by the Air Corps in Baldonnel for a helicopter to assist in the rscue operation following the recent collision involving the mv Kilkenny and the mv Hasselwerder; if any such helicopter was available; if not, the reason; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On Thursday 21 November 1991, following a request concerning details of resources available, the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) at Shannon were informed by the Air Corps that the Dauphin helicopter located at Finner Camp, County Donegal, was immediately available for search and rescue purposes and that an Alouette III could be despatched at first light. The Marine Rescue Co—ordination Centre, decided to request the Sikorsky S61 based at Shannon to respond to the search and rescue incident in Dublin Bay and to allow the Dauphin to remain in Finner to cover the west coast.

On Friday, 22 November 1991, the MRCC requested that the Alouette III join the search at first light. The Alouette responded accordingly and a Dauphin helicopter also assisted in the operation.
