Vol. 414 No. 6

Written Answers. - General Gough Statue.

Mervyn Taylor

Ceist:

57 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans to ensure the return of the equestrian bronze sculpture of General Gough and, as part of the celebrations of Dublin being the designated European City of Culture, to have it erected in a suitable public venue in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

116 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if his Department have completed the negotiations with owners of the partially damaged equestrian bronze statue of General Gough; if arrangements have been made for its return to Ireland; and if his Department have any plans, in conjunction with Dublin Corporation, to have the statue erected in a public place in Dublin city.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 57 and 116 together.

The Gough Statue was sold by the State in 1984 and has been located in England since 1986. At present there are no plans to have the statue returned.
