130 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the action, if any, taken by Ireland and other EC countries to help the victims of the recent earthquake in the area of Ebb in the Republic of Yemen; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The Government were concerned to learn of the earthquake which took place in the Yemen on 22 November 1991 and which, according to the latest information available to me, claimed eleven lives and caused widespread damage to housing infrastructure, leaving very many people homeless.
Unfortunately, due to the extremely heavy demands on the Disaster Relief Fund in 1991, the Government were not in a position to assist the victims of the earthquake, either bilaterally or through international organisations. Information is not available to me on action taken by other EC countries.
