Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - VHI Budgetary Commitment.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

162 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she will make a statement on recent media reports that (1) the VHI have decided they will only hand over the £3 million which the Government are seeking in return for a commitment to hold down the cost of private accommodation in public hospitals and (2) if the VHI hand over the £3 million, their reserves will probably be only about half the level required by the European Community.

It has now been agreed that the VHI will make a contribution of £3 million in recognition of benefits which will accrue to their members. The making of this contribution will not impede the VHI in maintaining financial viability. The overall amount of their reserves has already reached a very satisfactory level.
