Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil Capitation Grant.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

169 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the amount of pupil capitation grant at (a) primary and (b) post primary level in (1) 1980 and (2) 1992; and if he will further outline the amount the grant would be if it had been increased in line with inflation since 1980.

The basic rate of the capitation grant to primary schools in the 1979-1980 school year was £11.

The rate of grant for 1992 is £28.

If the grant had been increased in line with inflation the rate of grant would amount to £23.83.
The basic rate of capitation grant to secondary schools in the free education scheme is £150 per pupil. The corresponding figure for 1980 was £100 per pupil. The application to that figure of a cumulative increase of 116.6 per cent in the consumer price index between 1980 and 1992 would produce an amount of £216.60 per annum.
In addition to the above a special top-up grant has been paid since 1990 to primary schools in disadvantaged areas.
Furthermore, commencing in 1992, an additional capitation grant will be progressively introduced for primary and secondary schools geared towards meeting the cost of caretakers and clerical assistants. This additional grant will amount to £30 per student at primary level and £50 at secondary level in qualifying schools.
