Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mature Students Grants.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

182 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the proposals, if any, he has to pay third-level educational grants for mature students; and if he will include mature students who have already commenced studies and particularly a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 in these proposals.

Amendments to the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Acts, 1968 and 1978, and to the higher education grants scheme currently being finalised include provisions whereby for the award of grants: (i) mature students who secure a place in a third-level institution will be regarded as satisfying the academic attainment requirements and (ii) the income eligibility of mature students who are not dependent on their parents will be assessed by reference to their own, and, if married, their spouses income.

In accordance with normal practice, these improvements will take effect in the 1992 higher education grants scheme, and so will apply to mature students entering third-level education in 1992.
