Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Funding for Banks Security.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

189 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Defence the cost of providing a protection service for moneys belonging to the banks; the amounts which are paid by the banks in return for this service.

The Defence Forces, pursuant to their role of rendering aid to the civil power, give assistance to the Garda Síochána in protecting movements of cash.

The estimated direct additional cost excluding pay in respect of the Defence Forces of providing such assistance for the year ended 31 December 1991 was £1.6 million approximately.
As announced in the Budget Statement on 29 January 1992 it is proposed to seek a contribution from the associated banks towards the costs involved.
