Vol. 416 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

In accordance with Standing Order 30 I wish to advise you, Sir, that, at the commencement of public business today, I intend to request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific important matter of public interest, namely:

The extent of public liability for the consequences of the recent fire at the United Meat Packers plant at Ballaghaderreen. I am advised that the insurance broker contracted by the Department of Agriculture and Food, who are the intervention agency, did not pass on the £150,000 premium to the French insurer who was the base insurer in this case and that, in any event, the French insurer had written last October making it clear that they were no longer willing to grant the cover sought following a general review of their risk exposure; that, as a consequence, the Irish taxpayer may now be held liable for up to £25 million. I am advised that the broker concerned may have other business with the beef industry.

Accordingly, I request your agreement to permit the House to debate the public interest implications of this matter.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
