Vol. 416 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

John Bruton

Ceist:

98 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the number of national monuments in the country which are in private ownership; and if access to any of these by members of the public has been barred by the owners in recent times, because of fears about occupier's liability for injury to visitors.

The vast majority of the country's thousands of national monuments are situated on lands which are in private ownership. Most landowners are happy to allow access to members to the public when the normal courtesies are observed. For a variety of reasons, including the question of public liability, some landowners do not permit public access. The same situation pertains at some national monuments that are in the guardianship of the Commissioners of Public Works, but which are in private ownership.
