John Bruton

Ceist:

103 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his plans for improvement in crime protection in County Meath and other areas on the outskirts of Dublin.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 103 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of indictable crimes recorded for the subdistricts of County Meath for the years 1989 to 1990 are set out in the tabular statement below. Figures for 1991 are not yet available.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they have taken a number of measures to deal with the problems being experienced in County Meath and surrounding areas. These include the use of foot and mobile patrols, the frequent use of check points at various locations at unpredictable intervals and close liaison between gardaí in districts both within and bordering the Louth/Meath division to ensure a co-ordinated anti-crime response.

In addition, the Garda authorities continue to enlist the help of the community in the area in the fight against crime. To this end they avail of all opportunities to advise the public on sensible crime prevention measures which they can take. They are continuing to promote the community alert and neighbourhood watch schemes in the area which encourage the community to be vigilant to the danger of crime, to work closely with the Garda and to take appropriate measures to project their homes and their property. There are now 67 neighbourhood watch schemes and three community alert schemes actively operating in the Louth/Meath division.
The Garda authorities inform me that they are satisfied that these measures are being effective in dealing with crime in the area. However, I am assured that the situation in Meath and surrounding areas is being kept under constant review.
