Vol. 417 No. 2

Written Answers. - Radioactive Material Detection.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

37 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Energy if he will give details of the background to the recent incident where radioactive material was, (a) found at Irish Steel and (b) processed.

The existence of radioactive material was detected in a consignment of scrap bought in by Irish Steel in September 1991. The material was not processed.

Irish Steel have acquired equipment to detect radioactive sources in incoming consignments of scrap steel. In this instance the monitoring system detected slightly contaminated material from the fertiliser industry. I must emphasise that the radioactive content of materials detected to date at Irish Steel would not cause a hazard to personnel.
