Vol. 417 No. 3

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Application.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

32 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in an appeal case (details supplied) which has forced the applicant to leave home and move to Galway, and for the recent decision there to refuse the payment of unemployment assistance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned, a student, applied for unemployment assistance at the Department's office in Tipperary in June 1991. Her means were assessed at £29 a week.

She appealed against this assessment in August of last year. She subsequently moved to Galway and in the transfer of her claim papers to this Department's office in Galway it appears that her appeal was unfortunately overlooked.

She subsequently applied for unemployment assistance in Galway but again her claim was disallowed. She returned to Tipperary and made a further claim in February last. Following a review of her current circumstances she has been assessed with nil means in respect of this claim and she is entitled to unemployment assistance of the maximum rate appropriate to her.

The chief appeals officer is arranging for the person's claim in respect of the period up to 14 February 1992 to be examined by an appeals officer as a matter of urgency. I will let the Deputy know the outcome immediately a decision is made.
