Vol. 417 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dungarvan (Waterford) Sewerage Scheme.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

14 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give urgent attention to the approval of proposals submitted by Waterford County Council for the provision of a sewerage scheme at Clonea-Ballinacourty, Dungarvan, County Waterford in view of the high concentration of tourism amenities in this area and its significance as a popular tourist resort; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A preliminary report for a Clonea-Ballinacourty sewerage scheme was received in my Department some weeks ago and is under technical examination. I cannot indicate at this stage when I will be in a position to issue a decision.

Is the Minister aware that serious problems have been recurring in this area for the past few summer seasons given the lack of a proper sewerage scheme in the locality that the emissions pose a health hazard and are not conducive to the attractiveness of the resort?

I thank the Deputy for adopting a reasonable approach to this matter, and should I say that the existing arrangements are unsatisfactory and unacceptable.

The money is in the post.

As soon as the preliminary work on the technical aspects has been completed I will be extremely anxious, given my knowledge of this area and the information which the Deputy has passed on to me privately, to try to solve the matter as soon as possible.

That resort is of a major significance for Tipperary people in general. What would they do without it?

What about Brittas Bay?

From Clonmel to Roscrea.

That disposes of questions for today.
