27 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of new housing units started, throughout the country in, (a) the private sector and (b) the public housing programme for 1982 to 1987 and from 1987 to 1992; if the needs were met during both periods; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Information on new private housing "starts" is not available in my Department. The number of "starts" on the local authority housing programme in the five-year period 1982 to 1987 was 27,417 and for 1987 to 1992, inclusive, is estimated at some 6,200. I am satisfied that the level of housing output was, in the aggregate, adequate in these periods.
