Vol. 417 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beaumont Hospital Neurosurgical Services.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

2 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he will outline his plans to deal with the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the neurosurgery services in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9, in light of the media reports (details supplied).

I have been concerned for some time in relation to the situation at the National Neurosurgical Centre at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Since becoming Minister, I have been examining this very complex situation to see what steps might be taken to resolve the difficulties.

I would like to assure the Deputy that I will do my utmost to assist in reaching a satisfactory conclusion to the matter.

I am glad to inform the Deputy that two additional consultant neurosurgeons have recently taken up duty at the hospital, one of whom has a special interest in paediatric neurosurgery. This means that there is now a complement of six neurosurgeons attached to the neurosurgical centre.

Is the Minister aware of very considerable delays in patients receiving attention, of appointments being postponed? Also, is he aware that the waiting list for neurosurgery has increased by 10 per cent in nine months? Finally, is he not concerned that the inquiries, which are being held in private and outside the knowledge of patients and the public generally, are having a disruptive effect on this whole department? There is considerable public concern about what is going on and there is a need for decisive intervention in this area.

Yes, I agree fully with the Deputy. The waiting list is increasing for the simple reason that the parties concerned are involved in the Medical Council inquiry. I have asked the Medical Council how long more they expect to deliberate on this question and I am hoping to receive a positive response. I have also taken further measures which may help to ease the problem. I would ask for the Deputy's forbearance while we ascertain whether the matter can be resolved quickly.
