Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork Garda Stations.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

165 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda stations in the Cork east division in need of repair; if he will give details of same; the plans, estimated cost and proposed time frame for repairs, refurbishment and replacement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The current Garda building programme was launched seven years ago to tackle the serious accommodation crisis which existed in many Garda stations. The programme, which is based on priorities agreed following consultation with the Garda representative associations, has seen the replacement of eight divisional headquarters stations, 13 district headquarters stations, 30 smaller stations and the provision of four major extensions.

In so far as the Cork east Garda division is concerned, new station buildings have been provided as follows: Blackrock, Gurranabraher, Watercourse Road, Mayfield and the new divisional headquarters at Anglesea Street. A major extension to Togher district headquarters, at a total cost of £750,000, is due to be completed this year, as is a new station at Charleville. I might also mention that renovation works totalling approximately £90,000 were carried out at 17 stations in the division in 1991 and to date in 1992.
Other works authorised to date this year are new interview rooms at the Bridewell station, renovation works at Rathcormac, Glantane and Cloyne stations and the installation of storage heating at Ballycotton, Whitegate, Ardmore and Cloyne stations. Further improvements in the Cork east division will be provided over the coming years in the light of overall priorities and available finance.
