168 Mr. Wyse asked the Minister for Justice the number of people currently on Garda files who are regarded as missing persons or have been reported as missing persons.

Pearse Wyse

Ceist:

169 Mr. Wyse asked the Minister for Justice if there is a special section within the Garda Síochána for the continuous monitoring and up-dating of files in respect of missing persons reported.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 168 and 169 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is a section within the Garda Síochána which has responsibility for the monitoring and updating of files in respect of persons reported missing.

I am also informed that there are 417 persons on file who have been reported missing for the period 1970 to date and who have not yet been located. I would also like to refer the Deputy to the Garda Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library, which contains details of the number of persons reported missing during the relevant year and the number of such people not traced.
