Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Site for Disposal of Meat.

John Connor

Ceist:

250 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his Department's role in the choice and use of the Cregga Hill site, County Roscommon as the location for disposal and burial of the meat from the UMP plant fire at Ballaghaderreen and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statutory responsibility for waste management and waste planning, including the selection and operation of waste disposal sites, is a matter for the local authority concerned. In this case, Roscommon County Council, in their response to the incident at Ballaghaderreen, decided that the Cregga Hill site and the disposal arrangements proposed there represented the option most likely in the circumstances to minimise danger to human health and the environment. An inspector from my Department provided advice and assistance to the council on an informal basis in their consideration of the matter.
