Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Mayo Local Authority Housing.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

273 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the number of rural houses constructed by Mayo County Council in each of the past ten years; the numbers provided by the Urban District Councils of Castlebar, Westport and Ballina in County Mayo for this period; and if in view of the growing housing lists in these areas he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the question relates to the numbers of single rural houses provided by Mayo County Council. Information on this for periods prior to 1985 is not available in my Department. On the basis of returns furnished by the council, the numbers of such houses constructed in each of the years 1985 to 1991 are as follows:

In relation to the urban district councils, I assume the question relates to the numbers of local authority houses provided by each authority. In this regard, I refer to the reply to Question No. 218 of 19 April, 1988 for the period 1982-1987. The position in relation to 1988 and subsequent years is as follows:

I am satisfied that the allocations for the housing programmes for these authorities, coupled with the complementary initiatives inA Plan for Social Housing and the casual vacancies which arise in the existing housing stock, represent an adequate response to the needs generally.
