Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bicycle Helmet Standards.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

108 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has satisfied himself that all bicycle helmets in this country are up to the required standards; and if he will give details of these standards.

At present there are no mandatory standards in Ireland for bicycle helmets. From 1 July 1992 under EC Council Directive 89/686/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the member states relating to personal protective equipment, such equipment, including bicycle helmets, will have to satisfy wide-ranging safety requirements. Regulations are presently being drafted to transpose the directive into Irish law.
