Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Construction Projects Policy.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

120 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the reports from the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (details supplied) that many State-funded and State-aided construction projects were being allocated to non-qualified architects; and if he will outline the Government's policy on this practice.

My initial inquiries into the matter raised by the Deputy indicate that State agencies generally do not follow the practice he suggests in relation to grant-aided projects.

A national system of building regulations will come into operation on 1 June this year. There will be a statutory obligation on all those involved in the design and construction of buildings to comply with these regulations. These are intended to make sure that necessary standards are met.
