Vol. 418 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case:

Deputy Howlin — the ongoing problems in the neuro-surgery department of Beaumont Hospital which have grave implications for public confidence in the service provided there; Deputy Stagg — the proposals by Bord na Móna to close the briquette factory at Lullymore, County Kildare, in pursuit of Government policy for Bord na Móna; Deputy Durkan — if the Minister for Energy will exercise his powers under section 18 (2) of the Turf Development Act, 1946, to direct the board of Bord na Móna to furnish him with all relevant information pertaining to the board's decision to close their briquette manufacturing plant at Lullymore, County Kildare; Deputy Lee — the current controversy over the delay in providing coronary artery by-pass surgery; Deputy Connor — the outcome, if any, of investigations of fraud against a person — details supplied — whether a warrant for his arrest still stands and the steps being taken to extradite him to face charges in this country; Deputy McCartan — the circumstances surrounding the incarceration of a youth who took his own life in St. Patrick's Institution, North Circular Road, Dublin 7, on 17 March, and the need to establish a full judicial inquiry into these circumstances; Deputy De Rossa — the urgent need to provide sufficient funding and premises for a Dublin northside women's refuge where the current demand on the service far outstretches resources and premises currently available; Deputy Callely — the concern in connection with the neuro-surgery department in Beaumont Hospital, particularly with regard to two patients who are in the middle of neuro-surgery procedures and due to be operated on by the neuro-surgeon who was suspended on 1 April 1992; Deputy Ryan — the need for additional policing for O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, particularly given the difficulties businesses are experiencing in the area; Deputy Gerry O'Sullivan — the dramatic increase in Housing subsidies paid by the Southern Health Board last year; Deputy Deenihan — the major problems facing many Irish groups involved in providing emigration services in the US following the withdrawal of funding by the Irish Government for 1992; Deputy Allen — the reduction in the allocation to FÁS Teamwork schemes thereby causing much disruption to the activities of voluntary groups as well as the loss of Teamwork jobs; Deputy McGinley — whether the Minister for Finance will give immediate consideration to the redeployment of 59 customs and excise staff in County Donegal who will be surplus to requirements following the completion of the internal market on 1 January 1993.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following Deputies: Deputy Durkan, Deputy Howlin and Deputy De Rossa.
