Vol. 418 No. 1

Written Answers. - FCA Rationalisation.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

62 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence when the study of the reallocation of Permanent Defence Forces personnel attached to FCA and Slua Muirí units to PDF units is anticipated to conclude; and if he will make a statement on the fact that only temporary PDF training officers have been withdrawn from the second line reserve.

The review of the rationalisation of FCA units has not yet been concluded.

The object of the exercise is to establish how the training and administration of the FCA might be carried out on a more cost effective basis. As part of that process 45 Permanent Defence Forces officers who had been employed with the FCA on a part-time basis were withdrawn from such duties in September 1991. In addition six officers who for various reasons were posted out of FCA units in 1991 were not replaced. Apart from these 51 officers, no decision has been taken to transfer Permanent Defence Forces staff from any FCA unit.
