Vol. 418 No. 1
69 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Defence whether the Gleeson report recommendations relating to annual assessment reports are now in operation; and whether he has satisfied himself with current practice.
80 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence whether the Gleeson report recommendations relating to annual assessment reports are now in operation; and whether he has satisfied himself with current practice.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 69 and 80 together.
The system of annual confidential reports for officers was fundamentally reviewed and revised in 1990 pursuant to the Gleeson Commission's recommendations. In particular officers are now allowed to see the principal sections of their reports — rating, recommendation for promotion and recommendation for overseas service. Arrangements for monitoring the suitability of the assessment system by the military authorities on an on-going basis are in operation.
