Vol. 418 No. 1

Written Answers. - UN Military Representative.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

71 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Defence when it is planned to place a permanent military representative in the UN headquarters in New York; and his views on whether we are currently at a disadvantage as a result of the lack of such a presence.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

76 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Defence when it is planned to place a permanent military representative in the UN headquarters in New York; and his views on whether we are currently at a disadvantage as a result of the lack of such a presence.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 71 and 76 together.

Irish Army officers have served as military advisers to the United Nations Secetariat in New York during the period November 1978 to June 1991. Such appointments are a matter for the United Nations.
There are no plans to appoint a military representative with the Irish Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. Such an appointment would not be warranted in present circumstances.
