Vol. 418 No. 2

Written Answers. - Regional Tourism Job Losses.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

16 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if her attention has been drawn to the number of job losses in regional tourism in the recent past; if she will outline the impact this reduction in job numbers is having on the tourism industry; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Estimates for employment sustained by tourism show a national increase in job numbers from approximately 63,000 jobs in 1987 to over 82,000 at the end of 1990. Although there is no breakdown available on a regional basis, there is sufficient evidence, based on the distribution of overseas tourism revenue, to suggest that all regions have shared to a greater or lesser degree in this growth.
