Vol. 418 No. 2

Written Answers. - Air Fares.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

20 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if any special measures are proposed to reduce the cost of air fares to regional airports which act as a disincentive to tourists to visit here; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Given the importance of competitive access fares for the development for tourism, Government policy on the level of air fares to/from regional airports, is that they should be competitive. While the level of any particular fare is essentially a matter for the airlines having regard to the economics of operating particular services, Aer Lingus and Ryanair accept this policy. Furthermore, my Department constantly monitor fares charged by our airlines to ensure Government policy is adhered to. I am satisfied that the level of air fares to/from the regional airports are competitive with fares on similar intra European routes.
