Vol. 418 No. 2

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment Waiting List.

Michael Finucane

Ceist:

63 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of, (a) the number of persons, by category, waiting orthodontic treatment in the Mid-Western Health Board at present, (2) the allocation made available to deal with these lists for 1992 and (3) the average waiting period; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Children seen by the Mid-Western Health Board's school dental service are assessed for the provision of specialist orthodontic treatment on the basis of a scale of severity and children who qualify for treatment are placed on a treatment waiting list.

In Category A which is the category of greatest severity children receive immediate treatment. The waiting lists in the other categories are as follows: Category B — 884; and Category C — 101. The average waiting period in these categories is two to two and a half years.

The Mid-Western Health Board has a fully developed consultant orthodontic service and has allocated £290,000 for orthodontic services in 1992.
