Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Libraries.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

166 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the criteria, if any, which exists whereby towns of a certain population are ensured of a public library facility; and if he will direct Cork County Council to provide such a facility in Carrigaline, County Cork which has a population of 7,000.

As indicated in the reply to Question No. 69 of 25 March last, the development of the library service generally is a matter for the relevant local authorities. Consideration of funding for a particular project does not arise unless and until the project is recommended by the local authority to me. No such recommendation has been made by Cork County Council in respect of this project and I have no power of direction in the matter.
