Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Promotion of Irish Fish Products.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

49 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for the Marine if, in view of the huge potential of the continental market for fish and fish related products, he will outline the plans he has to promote Irish fish products there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would like to assure the Deputy of the Government's commitment to the continued expansion of Irish fish exports and, in particular, to the further development of the continental European market which is Ireland's most important outlet for fishery products.

BIM is responsible for the development and implementation of the Government's promotional and marketing programme. For 1992, the board has prepared an extensive programme in mainland Europe involving support for Irish exporters in the marketplace, participation by Irish exporters and processors at important trade shows, retail chain promotions in all key markets and a programme of inward visits for buyers and consumer and trade journalists.

At my direction BIM is giving top priority to developing the European market over the coming year. The thrust of Ireland's marketing programme is centred on maximising the potential of the European market which was worth approximately £120 million to Irish exporters in 1991.
I am pleased to inform the Deputy that with an increasing awareness at both trade and consumer level in Europe of the quality of Irish seafood, the outlook for our exports to continental markets for the foreseeable future is for further significant annual increases.
