Ceist:

62 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Defence the average weekly pay earned by soldiers stationed in Monaghan Barracks, County Monaghan who have been on special duty during the month of January 1992; if soldiers on 24-hour duty are paid an additional allowance for this duty over and above the special Border duty allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The average gross weekly pay of soldiers stationed in Monaghan Barracks during the month of January 1992 was £294.21. This sum includes military service allowance (at present £33.80 a week) and Border duty allowance (at present £37.87 a week). The military service allowance is designed to compensate for certain liabilities associated with military service, such as long and unsocial hours of duty and the restrictions inherent in military discipline; the Border duty allowance is payable on a continuous basis, including periods of annual leave, sick leave, absence on courses, etc.
