Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Liam Kavanagh

Ceist:

29 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement with regard to the construction of local authority housing on a national basis; and if he will outline whether the 1992 housing construction plan is meeting housing needs.

The provision in the 1992 Public Capital Programme for the housing construction programme provides for the financing of work during the year on the 1,330 houses in progress at 31 December 1991 and 1,500 authorised "starts", including those carried forward from 1991. I am satisfied that this level of activity, supplemented by casual vacancies which arise in the normal course and the various measures in A Plan for Social Housing will cater for the housing needs of some 7,000 households in 1992 compared to about 5,100 last year. This represents a reasonable response to current housing needs.

Details of the allocations to individual authorities for their 1992 housing construction programme were given in the reply to Questions Nos. 127 and 128 of 5 March 1992.
