Written Answers. - Taxi Licences.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

78 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment whether taxi licences are allocated to provincial towns such as Dungarvan, County Waterford; and if so, if he will outline the qualifications necessary.

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations provide for the operation of taxis in 16 cities and towns which are designated as taximeter areas. Dungarvan is not one of these and taxis are, accordingly, not licensed to operate in the town.

The arrangements for receiving and processing applications for taxi licences and for granting such licenses in taximeter areas are matters for the Garda Commissioner, acting in accordance with the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations, which set out the general criteria which must be considered by the Commissioner.

I will be considering the question of applying taximeter area status to additional towns and the question of licensing arrangements in the light of the report of the committee which has been reviewing the law and procedures governing the licensing and operation of small public vehicles generally.
