Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools.

Louis J. Belton

Ceist:

127 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the present position regarding the development of Newtownforbes girls' national school, Newtownforbes, County Longford, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Tender documents for the Newtownforbes national school, County Longford project have been completed. The question of invitation of tenders is now being considered in the context of the available capital and a decision in this regard will be conveyed to the school authorities at the earliest possible date.

Ceist:

128 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education if negotiations have been completed regarding the identification of a site for Scoil An Duinnínigh, Malahide, County Dublin; if, in this regard, he will confirm the Government's commitment to build a much needed school in this area; whether it is envisaged that this school will be completed by September 1992 in time for the new school year; if not, if he will confirm that adequate accommodation will be available for the children in September 1992 and in this regard, he will meet with the parents to allay their fears at an early date.

The diocesan authorities have offered a site to my Department for a new school for Scoil an Duinnínigh, Malahide, County Dublin and negotiations for its purchase are in train. Following discussions with the school authorities, it has been agreed to provide prefabricated classrooms on the site and the necessary planning in this regard is in hands. Because there are a number of factors outside the control of my Department in this whole matter, I am not in the position to say at this point when the new accommodation will be available. However, I can assure the Deputy that the case is being dealt with as a matter of urgency.

Officials from my Department will be meeting with the school authorities on 21 May 1992.
