Vol. 419 No. 9

Written Answers. - Visa Delay.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

86 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if he will intervene in the case of a person (details supplied) who has been waiting, since his remarriage in June 1991, for a visa for his wife (details supplied) in order that she may join him here in Ireland; and the reason his Department stated that this man had remarried before his divorce when documentation supplied clearly shows that his divorce was finalised in 1989 and is recognised by Pakistani law.

An appeal against a refusal of an application for a visa for the person in question is under consideration. A number of documents in support of that appeal have been received. They include a document dated 27 October 1991 which purports to be a divorce deed with retrospective effect to September 1989. The statement attributed to my Department in the later half of the Deputy's question is not correct. However, as the Deputy will appreciate, there is a duty on my Department to consider fully any documentation submitted in support of a visa application and to seek to clarify matters where necessary. Any inference taken from attempts to achieve such clarification is a matter for the individual himself.
