Vol. 420 No. 4

Written Answers. - Youthreach Programme.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

129 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if he will outline (a) the Youthreach Programme covering the Dublin area, (b) the programmes available, (c) the number of places on this project in 1992 and (d) the moneys allocated for the provision of Youthreach in (1) Dublin and (2) outside the Dublin area.

Youthreach is an integrated two year programme of education, training and work experience for young people who are at least six months in the labour market and who have left school early without any qualifications or vocational training. My Department, via the Vocational Education Committees, provides 1,600 first year places on the programme, while FÁS provides approximately 900 first year places and all of the second year. All participants are paid a training allowance by FÁS. The figures given below for 1992 represent the provision and costs within the education sector only.
