Ceist:84 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the setting up of an Estimate Committee of Dáil Éireann to scrutinise public expenditure proposals in advance.

Recent reforms introduced by the Government include an arrangement whereby the Dáil debates a motion on the Estimates as soon as the Abridged Estimates Volume is published. The Government have also made more Dáil time available for discussion of the individual estimates.
I consider these procedures to be adequate and I do not propose to set up an Estimate Committee as proposed by the Deputy.
