Vol. 420 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballycullane (Wexford) Garda Station.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

121 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his intentions with regard to the Garda station at Ballycullane, New Ross, County Wexford, where the only remaining officer, a sergeant, is due to retire in the near future; whether this sergeant and the garda who was transferred from Ballycullane station last year will be replaced, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The assignment of Garda manpower to individual Garda stations is a matter for the Garda authorities. They inform me that they are not in a position at present to allocate additional manpower to Ballycullane station having regard to overall policing needs in the Wexford Garda Division. I am assured by the Garda authorities, however, that they intend to maintain a Garda presence at Ballycullane station following the retirement of the present serving member.

In addition to the service provided from the local station the Ballycullane area is also covered by a patrol car based in Campile and a motorcycle from Carrick-on-Bannow on a shared basis. There is also a Community Alert Scheme in Ballycullane of which the local member is liaison officer.
