Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Limerick Prison Detention.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

120 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that concern has been expressed regarding the conditions under which a woman prisoner (details supplied) is being held in Limerick Prison, County Limerick, in effective isolation from other prisoners; and the reason the prisoner's request to be transferred to Mountjoy Prison, Dublin 7 has so far been rejected.

The female prisoner to which the Deputy refers was sentenced to four concurrent 10 year sentences for robbery and firearms offences and was committed to Mountjoy Prison on 2 July, 1990. She was subsequently transferred to Limerick Prison where she is currently housed in the female section of the prison. The regime which applies to her is the same as that which applies to all females housed there and at no stage since her transfer has she been segregated from other female prisoners. It would be inappropriate to disclose the reasons why her request for transfer to another prison cannot be granted.
