Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Political Asylum Applications.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

123 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of (a) the number of applications for political asylum that he has (1) received, (2) granted and (3) refused and (b) their countries of origin, for each of the years 1988 to 1991 and to date in 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows: In 1988, there were 49 applications for political asylum of which 2 were granted and 41 refused. In 1989, there were 36 such applications of which 1 was granted and 32 refused. In 1990, 62 applications were received, 1 was granted and 50 refused. In 1991, 31 applications were received, 1 was granted and 15 refused. This year to date, 7 applications have been received, none have been granted and 6 have been refused. The number of applications received in the period in question include some applications which were withdrawn or not pursued, primarily because the applicants had left the jurisdiction, or which continue to be processed.

With regard to the Deputy's request for information about the countries of origin of applicants for political asylum, I do not consider that it would be appropriate for me to provide such information. Applications for political asylum are, by their very nature, treated on a wholly confidential basis.
