Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Political Asylum Policy.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

132 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the Government's policy on political asylum, particularly in relation to the arrangements which were put in place in 1985, between the then Minister for Justice and the UN High Commissioner on Refugees; if his attention has been drawn to the unhappiness of Amnesty International about the operation of policy in this respect; and if he will take their views into account.

The Government's policy on political asylum is in accordance with our international obligations arising from our accession to the United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. I am satisfied that the procedural arrangements established in 1985 during the Deputy's term of office as Minister for Justice are sufficient to meet these obligations.
