Ceist:

189 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools which are currently seeking funding from his Department for either repair or building projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 183, 186, 187, 188 and 189 together.

Of the 18 primary school building projects on the published list approved to go to tender in 1992, 13 have been advertised for tender and five have yet to go to tender. When tender documentation has been prepared for each of these five cases tenders will be sought by way of advertisement. The estimated cost of these five projects is £650,000.

The other information sought by the Deputy in respect of national schools is not readily available because of the large number of schools involved and the extent of the capital grants given for minor and major projects. The compilation of the information would necessitate the deployment of staff from other more urgent duties which, in the circumstances, would not be justified.
A total of 291 post-primary schools received funding in respect of building projects in 1991.
