Written Answers. - School Boards Membership.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

191 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the number of male and female members of primary schools boards of management; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Primary schools having a recognised teaching staff of up to six teachers are constituted in the following manner: three members nominated by the Patron, two members elected by parents (one a mother, the other a father) and the prinicipal teacher.

For schools with a staff of seven teachers or more, the board is comprised of four members appointed by the Patron, two elected parents representatives (a mother and father), the principal teacher and another teacher on the staff elected by the teaching staff.

Therefore, there should be a minimum of one male and one female on each board.

With more than 20,000 Board members representing 3,200 schools it would take an inordinate amount of time to access the information requested by the Deputy.
