Ceist:

218 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health the number and category of new consultancy posts (a) sanctioned, (b) created and (c) filled in each of the health board districts in the ten year period ended on 31 December 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The data requested by the Deputy has been furnished to my Department by Comhairle na n-Ospidéal and is set out in the following tabular statement.

The following data reflect the development of new service initiatives and improvements in the provision of consultant services over the ten year period, 1.5.1982-1.5.1992. Agreement by my Department to the creation of new posts must necessarily have regard to service and personnel criteria in the context of the priority afforded to the post by the agency or agencies concerned and in particular to the availability of financial resources. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, Comhairle na nOspidéal has statutory responsibility with regard to approving each new and replacement consultant appointment.
As the data outlined deals only with new consultant posts, it should not be taken as indicative of the overall level of service provided in respect of each health board area nor of the level of consultant manpower nationally in respect of each of the disciplines.
