Ceist:

230 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health the number of people waiting for hip operations in the South-Eastern Health Board area; and when he intends to increase the number of orthopaedic surgeons assigned to Ardkeen General Hospital, County Waterford.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

There are currently 188 patients awaiting hip replacement operations in the South-Eastern Health Board area.

I understand from the South-Eastern Health Board that an additional temporary consultant orthopaedic surgeon is due to take up duty in Waterford Regional Hospital on 1 July, 1992. This appointment will improve the orthopaedic service available in the region.
