Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Development.

Vincent Brady

Ceist:

237 Mr. V. Brady asked the Minister for the Environment if it is envisaged that the Roads Authority will be given responsibility for road planning to alleviate the problem of serious traffic congestion in the city centre; if he will consider proposing to the authority that the original eastern by-pass plan which has been abandoned by Dublin City Council should be reconsidered; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Dublin Transportation Initiative which is currently underway is primarily intended to produce an effective process for ongoing and integrated transportation planning in the greater Dublin area. The initiative, as part of this process, will consider all options for improved north-south movement and port access, including the eastern by-pass.

The National Roads Authority will have overall responsibility for planning and supervising the construction, improvement and maintenance of the network of national roads (which will include the access routes to the principal ports and airports).
