Written Answers. - Wind Water Pumping.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

259 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether the electricity option for water pumping gives unfair advantage on the grounds of optimum use of resources; if he agrees that (a) given equal treatment wind water pumping would be justified in certain cases on conventional economic grounds, (b) wind water pumping would have ecological benefits as no fossil fuels would be consumed to produce electricty, thereby saving on emissions to the atmosphere, resulting in a reduction in fossil fuel imports; and if he will outline his intentions in regard to this matter.

Energy saving is a factor taken into account in the design and planning of public and group water and sanitary services schemes. My Department will continue to follow developments in the use of wind water pumping with a view to their relevance to the water and sanitary services programme.
