Vol. 421 No. 4
266 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of claims against the Motor Insurers' Bureau in each of the past three years and the value thereof; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland is a private company owned and financed by motor insurers. My function in relation to the bureau is limited to being a party to the agreement with the company (the most recent made in December 1988) which defines the criteria under which they will compensate innocent victims of road accidents caused by uninsured and "hit and run" drivers of motor vehicles. I have no function in relation to the management, financing and operation of the bureau.
