Vol. 421 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Green 2000 Advisory Group Report.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

5 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach if he has received the official report on environmental matters from Green 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The report of the Green 2000 Advisory Group is to be presented in October this year. The group undertook to work over an 11 month period, which began at their inaugural meeting on 10 October last year, and to present their report thereafter. They have been meeting on a monthly basis and I understand that the progress being made confirms their ability to present their report in October.

Is the Taoiseach aware the Green 2000 Advisory Group was the brainchild of his predecessor, the former Taoiseach, Deputy Haughey? The Wildlife Act allows for the setting up of the statutory Wildlife Council, whose functions include a great deal of the work being carried out by Green 2000. Would the Taoiseach not agree that Green 2000 should be asked to expedite their report so that we can take a more streamlined and cost effective approach to environmental matters?

The Deputy will be aware that the Green 2000 Advisory Group were given a time scale in which to work and that they are keeping to that time scale, which is more than can be said for some committees established on a similar basis. The report will be produced on time. We will bear in mind the points the Deputy raised to see if improvements can be made before then.
