Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Gallery Security Arrangements.

Vincent Brady

Ceist:

71 Mr. V. Brady asked the Taoiseach if, in view of the recent theft of a very valuable painting from the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin 2 he has satisfied himself with the existing security arrangements in the National Gallery and other State exhibition centres where valuable archives are either exhibited or stored.

The Department of the Taoiseach in conjunction with the Gardaí and officials of the Office of Public Works, liaise closely with the Director of the National Gallery to ensure that security installations, practices and procedures are maintained there at the optimum level. The same close security liaison exists as regards the other Cultural institutions which function under the aegis of my Department.

I am satisfied that there is continuous vigilance in regard to our security arrangements at the institutions in question and that they are subject to review to ensure that any necessary upgrading is carried out.
